MakerNotes

MakerNotes are vendor-specific EXIF extensions. Cameras write details here that generic photo viewers often hide—lens identity, custom modes, and other private tags.

On the Mac, reading MakerNotes before conversion is the safest way to see what the camera actually stored. That matters when you migrate Canon CR3, Nikon NEF, Sony ARW, or Fujifilm RAF into DNG, or when you audit which glass and bodies were used across a shoot.

Baseline EXIF covers shutter, aperture, and ISO. MakerNotes go further into manufacturer layouts that differ by brand and firmware. A local reader surfaces those tags without uploading RAW originals to a cloud inspector.

MSAM.media apps—ExifTool Reader, ExifTool Reader Pro, and EXIF Exporter Pro—run on macOS and are sold only through the Mac App Store. Use them to inspect MakerNotes on originals, then export selected fields when you need gear or QC inventories.

Pair MakerNotes checks with lens-data reviews and XMP sidecar policies so nothing important disappears between camera, catalog, and archive.
