Face Regions

Face Region Metadata & Privacy on Mac

Region metadata marks people and subjects in photos. It helps catalogs find faces—and it can reveal who was identified in a file you share.

Face-region tags often live in XMP following Metadata Working Group (MWG) region guidance. Some cameras, phones, and catalog apps also write vendor-specific region structures. Names or person IDs may travel with the regions depending on the writer.

Before client galleries, stock uploads, or social posts, inspect JPEG, TIFF, HEIC, and DNG selects on the Mac so you know whether region data is present. Treat this like GPS privacy: review first, then follow your studio policy for what may leave the building.

MSAM.media apps—ExifTool Reader, ExifTool Reader Pro, and EXIF Exporter Pro—run on macOS and are sold only through the Mac App Store. They help you inspect and export region-related fields locally. They are not a redaction guarantee—confirm tags, then apply your removal or export policy if regions must not travel.

Pair face-region checks with MWG guidance, GPS reviews, and copyright/credit fields so privacy and rights decisions happen together before delivery.
